Every fan of the genre knows that if you want good quality modern sounding sleaze, glam, rock’n’roll, hair metal bands with influences a la the 80’s you look for Swedish acts like Crashdiet, Hardcore Superstar, Crazy Lixx and many many others. However, did you guys know that Sweden is also the land of this band called The Rockford Heroes? No? Well why would you, right? Wrong! You would really want to know about these guys because, these guys, although at their first record, have a sound that makes you feel like right you are living and breathing in the 80’s standing between Skid Row, Scorpions and Rainbow.
‘Edge of the silverthorn’ is, as mentioned, their first album, and it introduces them to the world through 8 tracks infused with AOR keyboards, a voice reminding me of a more toned down Sebastian Bach (congrats for that!) and really addictive melodic riffs. I don’t know why but I have the feeling that the’ heroes’ have been doing this for quite a while now. Either that, or their chemistry is very strong.
As strong songs from the album I’m actually going to start with the soft-spot, the ballad, named in a slightly cliché way ‘Forever’ and which reminds me a bit of Firehouse’s ‘When I look into your eyes’. Actually, the best description for this song would be that it sounds like Skid Row and Firehouse got together and wrote a nice, beautiful, cheesy ballad together. ‘Capricious Arrow’ presents a neat fast tempo and a very catchy chorus. ‘No reason to believe’ is special for the presence of the strong old school keyboard sounds and ‘The day of return’ has a strong anthem potential!
As a down-side all I can say is that I would love to see a bit of a more modern spin on their tracks, just because I’m curious how that would sound like, and maybe some more diversity in the song structure, because at some points it becomes a tad repetitive.
All-in-all, the ‘heroes’ impressed me in a very nice way with their first ‘Edge of the Silverthorn’ and I recommend any hair metal/hard rock/AOR fan to listen to them because I guarantee you, they’re earcandy!
